BREAKING: MPs Pass Bill to Make Public University Education Free

Parliament has just passed the Education [Amendment Bill], 2025, a bold proposal that could make public university education free for all students in Kenya.
The Bill, introduced by Riara MP Hon. James Kinyua, also seeks to overhaul the current university funding model, which has been criticized as unfair and overly complicated. The debate in Parliament was heated, with MPs sharply divided on the issue.
While government-aligned MPs argued that the country cannot afford such a drastic move, warning that it could stretch public finances and affect other important services, the Bill passed with overwhelming support from the opposition and several independent members.
Supporters are celebrating the Bill as a win for young Kenyans and families who are struggling with the burden of high university fees. “Education shouldn’t be a privilege for a few,” one MP passionately said during the debate.
The Bill now heads to President William Ruto for assent. If signed into law, this could mark a historic shift in the future of higher education in Kenya.
While students and parents are excited, economists have raised concerns about how the government plans to fund this ambitious policy. Will it live up to the promises made in Parliament? Only time will tell. Stay tuned as we bring you updates on the next steps.
